Progress on belt drives
The machine cutting of the parts is done now. It the challenge is now the adaptation of the pulley wheels: the big one needs to be reduced in weight to a 40%; and so the other one. It is quite astonishing to see the massive wheel to be turned in a almost empty one. Next week we proceed further. It takes time to get it done...
The plan B progress
The plan B documentation is half way. We have made progress in the accurate matching of the props with the motors. We will have 12 motors in pairs of a contra-rotation mode. According to calculations we can have some 11 to12 min flight time: not bad for a start. End of next week we plan to publish a draft on how to design a 12 rotor man drone. In this we will step by step show how the design was made.
The airbag parachute progress
beginning of this week we had a good conversation with Allan of Skyscience (
http://www.sky-science.com/Contact-Us.htm ), a company in parachutes and special effects. He gave an overview of the different parachutes available to day: double layer rectangular, round, square, more Rogallo like, etc.. He favors the last one as it allows the person to direct the chute to a safe landing. We discussed the ideas and how to start with an experiment. A simple experiment with an existing parachute with an adapted airbag layer, could be low cost to start with. Will be continued..
Discussing issues with NLR (Netherlands Aerospace Laboratories)
With NLR there is a bunch of topics to be discussed. Some related to the idea of more frequent use of drones and small ultralights in the low air space. So a flight control system is to be developed and communication between the crafts is needed; Also a better emergency safety system is required.
Other issues are related with vibrations of the craft and the optimizing of the propellers (in case of contra rotating). So there is a lot to talk about.
Good to know there is the 32nd Annual AHS International

For Distributed Logistics in an Urban Setting Using Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. It is sponsored by Boeing for those that want to focus on that area.
